HOW IT WORKS
We will lead you to pick the best products for your needs. Here is why.

HAND-SELECTED CRITERIA
For every category, such as streaming music, the TechPolish team thought long and hard about what mattered to us and our friends in choosing a service. Ultimately these were criteria that could not be determined by a machine, but also would not vary much even if you asked 100 professional review experts.

COMPREHENSIVE DATA
So for every category the team picked 5 things that mattered, like how good the song selection was and the quality of sound that each service offered for streaming music. Then we scoured the web for what the company published, what consumers were saying, and what we had experienced personally.

SIMPLE RANKINGS BASED ON PRECISE NUMBERS
For every criteria, we then scored each service from 1-100, which is converted to the 1-5 star ranking in each criteria. User rank services as well. We balance what everyone says and make recommendations accordingly.

WE LOOK IT UP

All of our data come from months of research. We update our info daily.

WE USE EVERY SERVICE

No FAQ page can answer every question. We actually sign up, test, poke, prod, drop, knock over, lift up, look under, jump atop, and...use these products.

WE THINK BEFORE WE SPEAK
Even with information in hand and experience in mind, we consider real factors like - how long has this service been around, does the site have bugs that might suggest a broader instability, and more. Then, we write. As humans, not web scrapers.

USERS ARE TALKING

Our suggestions are based off of a balance of TechPolish's ratings and the aggregate reviews from our users. Trust us. Trust the community.

Dropbox is great. Simple to use. Always reliable in my experience. The user experience is really smooth and intuitive. They have emerged as the market leader in many ways, and I can understand why. I do wish they would give me more free space, but I can't be greedy! Love the service.

On most measures, Minus is great. Lots of free space (10gb), slick UX, and just a cool product (love the drag and drop functionality). But overall, I don't feel like it's ready to compete with the big boys (e.g. Dropbox and Box) yet. Some more years under its belt, and more guarantees on security, and I'm an unqualified fan!

Cool product to play with but I found it kind of hard to use and it doesn't suit my casual listening style. I don't want to be hopping from room to virtual room!

I was a huge fan of Grooveshark for a long time. But then recently, once Spotify came out, I didn't want to always fire up my browser for music. Plus it was distracting when the Grooveshark tab was nearby. I guess the Spotify app is just as 'nearby' but it feels separate. Grooveshark has a really intuitive interface, has songs I can't find on Spotify and iTunes, and was great for discovering stuff with others' playlists. But at the end of the day, I want a native app for music and Spotify is filling that need for me.

Slickdeals is cool. You can find a lot of stuff on there, but navigating the site and really knowing for sure whether you're getting a good deal is not super clear to me. If you mixed Slickdeals content with the Groupon or Livingsocial way of simplicity and new marketing, there would be a much better site.

I would recommend Posterous. I have used it in the past and now for the TechPolish blog. It's pretty simple and easy to use from different platforms. But some things in its new interface (Posterous Spaces) make the basic things harder to do (editing posts, for example). I hear good things about Tumblr too, though, and WordPress seems pretty powerful.

Blogger has fallen off. It is not a preferred platform for blogging. In recent years, more powerful (e.g. Wordpress) and simpler (e.g. Posterous and Tumblr) platforms have arisen, and Blogger has not kept up. It is not that easy to write and manage posts, and it feels isolated from the (digital) social world.

Spotify is awesome! I've converted from Grooveshark because Spotify is so effortless, and since it lives on my desktop, it doesn't slow my browser down. But Spotify is definitely lacking some content that Grooveshark has and is not as great for discovery as Pandora was.

If you want an easy, well-known way to share photos that's integrated into the rest of your daily life - then go for it with Facebook. But I never know if my photos will pop up somewhere I don't want them to. And granting access to my photos to people also in my Facebook network can confuse things. And I'm liable to mess up my entire privacy situation then. Also, I don't like how hard it is to recover the high resolution version of photos once they're on Facebook. But one upside is that you can just throw SO many photos on Facebook and they'll never stop you.

Picasa is easy to use. It's great that it's a part of Google because it just feels more integrated into my life, even though I don't use Google Plus right now or any of its social tools. It's important for uploading to be easy and fast, and Picasa achieves this.

Yogile is all right. It fits the specific use case of sending a link around to everyone and getting them to email/upload photos after an event to get everything together in one place. Used it after my sister's wedding since 1) Facebook wasn't private 2) Picasa and Flickr seemed to require accounts

Free product. Gets the job done for most image editing - can add gradients, crop, make things from scratch, layer. It is a Photoshop replacement if you're not a creative professional. Somethings could be made easier, an I wish versioning were easier but this is pretty good as far as I am concerned. Also, Picnik is now owned by Google, so using something that is independently owned and won't be shuttered because of a poor acquisition integration is something that gives me peace of mind

Usability

I am a fan of Tweetdeck. I use their services for personal and business purposes. The UI is very slick and I can manage multiple accounts seamlessly. A couple gripes would be 1) scheduled updates don't work for my Facebook page 2) maybe this is a Twitter restriction, but I don't think the desktop version Tweetdeck lets you access search.twitter.com (hopefully I just missed it!) - which forces me to then go to the Twitter web interface. But other than that, TD is good stuff. I also like that it works well on my iPhone. When I'm on the Caltrain I can just be Tweeting away, which makes me productive even when I don't have Internet access!

I have only used Hootsuite briefly but when I did, it just felt like an incomplete product. A lot of people love it, but it just does not feel as robust and comprehensive in its functionality when stacked up against Tweetdeck.

I used VerticalResponse for my previous company, INeedAPencil.com. We were able to effectively manage an email list of tens of thousands of members rather seamlessly. We were especially pleased with deliverability; I rarely would find that our emails were not ending up in users' inboxes. They also gave us 10,000 free credits per month as a social enterprise, so if you're a non-profit or serving the public good - see if they'll do the same for you.

I've used Disqus for a variety of projects. It's always been easy to set up, but it seems like tools like LiveFyre are really innovating on the commenting model in ways that Disqus has yet to discover.

In my brief experience with LiveFyre, it appears like this is the new go-to for commenting. This tool is the most innovative out there. The real-time experience is pretty impressive.
